Our Sun is far more than a distant light in the sky, its activity can have a direct impact on satellites, communications, navigation systems and power infrastructure here on Earth. In this talk, Dr David Barnes will explore the solar science carried out at RAL Space and its importance for understanding and forecasting space weather.

The talk will highlight STFC’s involvement in a series of pioneering solar missions over the past few decades, including SOHO, STEREO and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), as well as newer missions such as PUNCH. Through stunning images and movies from these spacecraft, we’ll take a journey from the Sun’s turbulent atmosphere to the space environment surrounding Earth, discovering how solar observations help us better understand our dynamic star and the effects it can have on our technological society.
